The Buchanan County Board of Supervisors Recognizes September as Library Month
At the Buchanan County Public Library, we believe it takes a community to create a library as wonderful as ours. In celebration of all the support we have received from Buchanan County citizens throughout the years, we are hosting Library Supporter Week from September 10-15, 2018. Every day, we will be celebrating library patrons. Each day that week, we will also be honoring a different group that has helped to make the library what it is today.
Library supporter week will begin with an event honoring BCPL Library Board of Trustees members past and present on Monday, September 10 at 6 pm. This event is open to the public, and light refreshments will be provided by the Friends of BCPL. On Tuesday, we will be honoring the members of the Friends of BCPL. On Wednesday, we will be honoring members of the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors. On Thursday, we will be acknowledging state-level support from the Library of Virginia and the Virginia State Legistlature. On Friday, we will be acknowledging the federal support provided by the Institute of Museums and Libraries. On Saturday, we will be honoring the foundations and civic organizations that have supported the library throughout the years. Each of these groups is instrumental in the library’s continued success.
Throughout Library Supporter Week, the library will be holding Library Fine Forgiveness. During this week, return library items checked out any time from September 2017 to the present and all fines on those items will be removed from your account. Visit or call during this week to have up to $20 in fines waived for overdue items that were returned before September 10, 2018. Monday through Friday September 10 through September 14th , everyone who visits the library in person will be entered into a daily door prize drawing.
Library Supporter Appreciation Week comes to a close with the annual BCPL Mini Con on Saturday, September 15 from 10:00 am until 4:00 pm. This year’s con includes a presentation by best-selling author Angela Knight, a visit from the Smoky Mountain Ghostbusters, our annual costume contest, vintage videogames, 80s trivia, crafts for children and adults, and a free bagged lunch.
BCPL will also be issuing new and replacement library cards at no cost during the entire month of September as part of National Library Card Sign-up Month. A library card gives you access to a wide variety of materials in both print and digital formats including books, magazines, audiobooks, movies and TV series, videogames, access to library computers and printing, and much more.
The library staff strives to fulfill our mission to provide “literacy, access to technology, and community building” to the citizens of Buchanan County through a variety of programs and services offered throughout the year. The library offers weekly storytimes for infants and children, school visits, homeschool support, and programs for teens and adults ranging from local history and basic computer skills to craft programs and courses on our 3D printer and Memory Lab. Special family programs are also offered throughout the year, including Summer Reading, BCPL Mini Con, the Pumpkin Carving Party, and Cookies with Santa.
