"The C'Shells" Live at BCPL
Friday July 18th, at 2pm, The C'Shells will be performing a live concert at the library to closeout this year's Kids Summer Reading Program! As part of the Closing Program certificates will be given out to participants.
 
 
BCPL Book and Film Club Discussion
Join our Book and Film Club as we discuss our current selection, "Looking for Salvation at the Dairy Queen", Monday July 14th at 6:30pm
 
 
Teen Video Gaming Night
Join us at the library on June 12th at 6:30pm for an open gaming night! Featuring Rockband and Dance, Dance, Revolution for Xbox 360, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart for Wii. Grades 6th through12th are welcome, refreshments will be provide by the Library.
 
 
Author Adda Leah Davis is visiting the Library
Adda Leah Davis will be visiting the Buchanan County Public Library on Thursday April 24th, 2008 at 6pm to discuss and sign copies of her book "Lucinda's Mountain". Set in 1950s McDowell County, the book explores the story of struggle between mountain traditions and a young woman's ambition. Refreshments will be available, please call the library at 935-5721 for more information.
 
 
Free Library Cards
If you haven't received your new Buchanan County Public Library card, please come by the library during our regular business hours until April 30th 2008.  If you already have a library card bring it by and exchange for a new key tag and card. If you don't have a card come by with an ID and proof of local address and we'll issue you one. Library card replacements are free throughout April in celebration of National Library week. Community Read
The Buchanan County Public Library is pleased to announce this year's Community Read selection: "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter" by Carson McCullers. Set in a small southern town during the Great Depression, this touching novel explores the intersection of five characters and their attempts at a more fulfilling life. We encourage everyone to stop by the library, find a copy, or ask a Book & Film Club member how to acquire a copy of this book. The Buchanan County Public Library will be hosting a 1930's party on Thursday May 15th, 2008 at 6pm to discuss the book and to celebrate the South during this time period. Eat It, Plant It, Read It Sale
The Friends of the Buchanan County Public Library are holding their annual Eat It, Plant It, Read It Sale on Friday May 2nd from 9am to Noon at the Buchanan County Public Library. Library surplus books, baked goods, and plants are sold at bargain prices with all of the proceeds going to support children's programs, author visits and library goals. TBA Mystery Movie Event
Enjoy a movie along with popcorn and soda as teens rescript a classic "B" movie. Thursday May 29th, at 6pm; Grades 6th through 12th are invited.
 
 
April 15th is Library Workers Day
Come celebrate Library Workers Day with the staff here at BCPL! on April 15th from 3pm to 5pm join us as we share cake, give tours of the library, and detail the things that make our library special.
 
 
TBA Video Game Tournament
Come join the TBA group at the library for a night video gaming fun! Thursday, March the 27th at 6pm, we'll have several game consoles setup, including a Nintendo Wii which will be projected onto a wall! Games and snacks will be provided, just show up and have a good time!
 
 
BCPL Book and Film Club Discussion
Thursday, March 13th at 6pm, join the BCPL Book and Film club as we discuss "Pegasus Descending" and share a Cajun Dinner. Upcoming title selections will be voted on.

Upcoming Winter Fun For Kids!
January fun!:
Babytalk is on hold until March
Story Hour and Little Bits will be having fun with stories about snow and snowmen; and
we'll be making snowflakes, paper snowman, bird feeders, and paper mittens as well as continuing
our stories and fun about the letters of the alphabet!

February fun!:
Story Hour and Little Bits will be enjoy stores about the color red, Dental Health Month, George and Abe,
Valentine's Day, Chinese New Year, and Black History Events!
Valentine Parties will be held on February 8th and 12th, watch for details in your weekly class!

March fun!:
During this month story times will feature fun with the weather, making pots of gold, Read Across America Day, National Pickle Month, and the color green!

Join current TBA--Teen Board of Advisor members and future members as we get ready to kick off the fall schedule.  TBA members meet the fourth Thursday of each month September through May to plan and carry out the Buchanan County Public Library's Teen events and activities and to fine tune library service to teens in our service area.  They also have lots of fun!

Book Talk by Wendy Lewkowicz

All teens are invited to hear local author Wendy Lewkowicz talk about her dream of writing a book for teens. She grew up in Troutville, Virginia, and later became a 7th grade English teacher in Texas. She now lives in Wise, Virginia with her husband and children. Her former students inspired her writing of the novel THE GIRL WHO ALMOST HAD IT ALL. Refreshments will be served and limited copies of her book will be for sale.

"Southwest Virginia Crossroads is an illustrated history and guide which features Buchanan County as it's first chapter, and a picture of the Garden Hole at Breaks Interstate park on it's cover. Joe Tennis is a columnist and award-winning features writer for the Bristol Herald Courier who "wrote this book to prove the state did not stop in Roanoke". Join us as Joe speaks about his book which he compares to a "history book with road directions", including stories of mills, spring resorts, old post offices, mining camps and logging towns; as well as locations for 50 waterfalls, 26 lakes, scenic rivers, fishing holes, hiking trails, parks and historic landmarks. The book also contains 138 original photos and 39 maps.
